After Google Panda and Penguin Updates link building is dead. Now Link Building can only bring a good page rank to your blog but you don't see much change in your traffic and search engine ranking. So what gives you a boost to your traffic??
The answer is high quality and unique content. This is where On-Page optimization comes into picture.

What is On-Page Optimization?

On Page Optimization refers to how you optimize your content for search engines to rank high.On Page Optimization includes Keyword Research,Google Title Tags,Meta Description etc.

Does On Page Optimization Works?

As I said after Google Panda and Penguin updates off page optimization which includes link building , blog commenting,Advertising are dead. The only thing which can give you good rank in Google is high quality content. On Page Optimization is nothing but providing high quality content to user.I will be explaining in detail read on....

On Page Optimization Guide for Bloggers:

Title of the Post:

The title of the post decides the amount of traffic which you get.Include good number of keywords in your post.Don't use very short titles.Short title post wont rank high in search engines. An ideal title must not be too long nor too short ,it must contain not more than 100 characters.Put all the targeted keywords in the title of the post itself.

Headings and Sub-Headings:

If you use H1 Tag as heading for your blog the use H2,H3 tags for sub headings.Use relevant keywords in H2,H3 tags as well. These tags not only plays an important role in on page optimization but also gives a good user experience.

URL(Permalink) of the Post:

The url of the post should not be too long.It should give the summary of the article. It should not contain more than 3-4 words. If you use same url structure as Title then Google may treat as keywords stuffing thereby loosing huge amount of traffic to your blog.
I suggest you to follow Mashable instead of Techcrunch while coming to SEO.Mashable takes not more than 3-4 words in the permalink but Techcrunch takes the whole title as the permalink thereby loosing a significant amout of traffic.I collected screenshot of permalinks of two gaint websites on same article;

Use relevant keywords:

Now I should say that keyword stuffing no more works and there is no certain keyword density to rank high. Keywords should come naturally and do not overoptimize.Over Optimization will definitely lead to a penalty.I have seen many blogs since few months getting penalized due to keywords stuffing.I suggest you to use Google Adwords Keywords Tool for keyword research.Use synonyms in the post which are related to the title on post you are writing.Use different keyword structures than sticking to a specific word or phrase.

Length of the Post:

Honestly speaking length of the post doesn't matter at all.Even a post with few words can rank high. The only thing that matters is relevancy, appropriateness and conciseness. But if you are writing a general article then maintain at least 500-600 words to stay safe.
My Experiment:I wanted to test whether a short article ranks high in search engines or not. Then I wrote a very short article which not even has 150 words and published it.After publishing the post I didn't get any traffic for one week. Then it started from the next week or so ,the article started ranking Top on google for the keyword "Top 10 Browsers".Even you can also check it.Below is the screenshot.

So,How this Post is ranking Top with only few words?

The post has got over 1000+ shares on different social networking site and various platforms in just a week. This lead to generate a large number of backlinks as well.
The main thing that made people to share this post because of its relevance.I didn't write it many words but included what is necessary and what they wanted to know with good images. An Image can speak thousand words came out to be very true in that post.Cheers :)

Internal Linking:

Always try to interlink your posts.Internal linking not only reduces bounce rate but also distributes page rank juice to all the pages. When talking about internal linking we should talk about standard Wikipedia. You can many blue words linking to other relevant pages. There is no specific count for the number of internal linkings but give internal links wherever appropriate.

Use Images in the Post:

I already explained above how I managed to rank top with a post less than 150 words and relevant images. An image can speak thousand words. So use appropriate images wherever necessary.Use atleast one image for every post.

Embedded Videos in the post:

If you are writing a post on How To Guide or tutorial then it is wise to make a short video tutorial. Most of the people find video tutorials better than a full page of words. It is better to embedded Vimeo videos instead of Youtube videos to get good rank in search engines.

External Linking:

Give a nofollow attribute whenever you are linking any low quality site. Most of the people may feel that giving dofollow links to other sites may harm your page rank but a dofollow attribute to a high priority site is equally important as nofollow.

Conclusion:

In my experience I have found that On Page Optimization is nothing but delivering an use friendly experience. If you deliver a good user friendly experience then search engines will automatically boost your ranking.
